Treat and Prevent Acne (For Good!) with These Options

Acne affects more than just your skin. It also affects your overall quality of life. If you are suffering from acne, our team at Cumberland Skin Surgery and Dermatology wants to help you regain your confidence and quality of life.

Living with Acne

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, acne affects more than 50 million people living in the United States, which makes it the most common skin condition. While about 85-percent of Americans ages 13 to 24 suffer from minor acne, the skin condition can become severe.

Our team at Cumberland Skin Surgery and Dermatology wants you to know that you don’t have to wait to “outgrow” your acne, especially when treatment options are available.

What Causes Acne?

Acne can range from mild to severe. There are a number of reasons why this skin condition appears, such as:

  • Bacteria
  • Clogged hair follicles due to oil and/or dead skin cells
  • Excess oil production
  • Hormones

Because acne can be persistent, it is important to seek medical attention in order to find the treatment option best suited for your skin condition.

Depending on the severity of your acne, symptoms of acne include:

  • Blackheads
  • Large, painful bumps
  • Painful, pus-filled lumps
  • Pimples
  • Small red, tender bumps
  • Whiteheads

If you are experiencing one or more of the aforementioned signs of acne, consider making an appointment with Cumberland Skin Surgery and Dermatology sooner rather than later so that you can get the proper diagnosis and treatment you need to get back to living your best life!

What Treatments Are Available?

As with any medical condition, prevention is the best acne treatment option. To increase your chances of preventing acne, make sure you are adopting a healthy skin routine, eating a healthy diet, and getting plenty of rest. If you like to wear makeup, try mineral or non-comedogenic varieties to see if they reduce breakouts.

For instance, you want to aim to wash your face at least twice a day. However, you want to make sure you’re gently cleansing your face (and not scrubbing too hard). As hard as it might be, if you do see a pimple appear, you need to refrain from popping (or picking at) it, as doing so will increase your chances of scarring. Also, avoid tanning beds and suntanning, as it will not help your skin condition, but instead, will increase your risk of developing skin cancer.

If preventive measures are not helping your acne condition, it is time to seek medical attention to explore the option best suited for you.
