Skin Cancer Screening

Did you know that there are more skin cancer diagnoses every year in the United States than all other cancers combined? Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer today in the U.S., with more than 9,500 people diagnosed with skin cancer every day – and this number is continuing to rise year after year.

This is why it has never been more important to get regular skin cancer screenings with a trained professional, such as the board-certified dermatologists at Cumberland Skin. Early detection of skin cancer is key for effective treatment and restoring the health of your skin.

Learn more about skin cancer screenings, and schedule yours today with one of the board-certified dermatologists at a Cumberland Skin clinic in Lebanon, Hermitage, Hendersonville, Brentwood, Spring Hill, or Cookeville, Tennessee.

INSPECT YOUR SKIN

What is a Skin Cancer Screening?

A skin cancer screening is a thorough examination where our board-certified dermatologists inspect the skin for suspicious spots, unusual marks, irregular patches, or atypical moles that do not look like the other moles nearby.

During a skin cancer screening in Central Tennessee, we also look for the warning signs and symptoms of basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma skin cancer, which are the most common types of skin cancer diagnosed in the United States.

QUESTIONS

Skin Cancer Screening FAQs

Read through our comprehensive FAQs section to better understand skin cancer screenings and why they are important. Our board-certified dermatologists cover frequently asked questions and concerns, such as what happens during a skin cancer screening, how long a screening takes, and where you can schedule your annual skin cancer screening in Central Tennessee.

A skin cancer screening is a simple, straightforward procedure that involves examining and evaluating all of your skin for the warning signs and symptoms of skin cancer.

For the screening, you’ll be asked to remove all of your clothing and put on a gown. Then, your dermatologist will examine your skin—from the top of your scalp to the bottom of your feet—for any signs of cancer.

During your skin cancer screening at Cumberland Skin, your dermatologist may use a bright light or hand-held magnification tool called a dermatoscope to look more closely at skin lesions.

A dermatoscope is a visual aid tool that shows extra details in the outer layer of skin that would not be visible to the naked eye. It is used during skin cancer screenings to aid in the diagnosis of a precancer or skin cancer, and it may be used to determine if a biopsy is needed for further examination.

Generally, a skin cancer screening takes no longer than 30 minutes to complete. The length of your individual skin cancer screening may vary depending on the size of your body, the number of moles you have, and if your doctor needs to further examine any suspicious lesions or spots.

While there is no exact age to start getting regular skin cancer screenings, there’s no wrong time to start either! We recommend getting an annual skin cancer screening once you turn 18 – especially if you are at an increased risk for skin cancer due to certain risk factors. These risk factors include:

  • Fair appearance (light skin, blonde or red hair, blue or green eyes)
  • Skin that burns or freckles easily
  • History of sunburns
  • Previous use of tanning beds
  • Significant amount of time spent outdoors on a daily basis
  • Family or personal history of skin cancer
  • Large quantity of moles

If you’re over the age of 18, we recommend contacting our team of board-certified dermatologists to schedule your skin cancer screening at one of our state-of-the-art dermatology clinics in Lebanon, Hermitage, Hendersonville, Brentwood, Spring Hill, or Cookeville, Tennessee.

The board-certified dermatologists at Cumberland Skin recommend performing self-exams of your skin on a monthly basis and visiting an experienced dermatologist for an annual skin cancer screening.

However, if you have a family history of skin cancer, several skin cancer risk factors, or have a multitude of moles on your body, we recommend getting skin cancer screenings every 6 to 12 months.

Yes, skin cancer screenings are an important part of preventive care. Preventive care is categorized as any medical service or health care that protects against or reduces the likelihood of health emergencies. Skin cancer screenings help to detect skin cancer and prevent it from spreading or getting worse through effective treatment.

As with many other different types of cancers, early detection of skin cancer provides a higher chance of curing this dangerous disease through effective skin cancer treatment, such as Mohs surgery, surgical excision, curettage, cryotherapy, or a combination of each.

According to a multi-year study done in 2018, the average cost of a skin cancer screening in the United States was $150. Of that cost, $105 (70%) was for office-visit fees, and $45 (30%) was for biopsy and pathology fees.

However, the cost of your skin cancer screening in Central Tennessee may vary depending on several different factors, such as the location of the clinic, if there are additional physician fees, the type of treatment (e.g. if you need a biopsy), and more.

If you would like more information on the cost of a skin cancer screening at Cumberland Skin, contact our office today. We’re happy to answer any questions you may have.
