What is Skin Cancer?

Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer diagnosed in the United States. This form of cancer begins in the skin, which is the largest organ of the body. When skin cells suffer from unrepaired DNA damage, this triggers cell mutations, causing the cells to rapidly reproduce out of control. This rapid reproduction results in the growth of cancerous lesions and tumors.

Skin Cancer & Treatment FAQs

If you’re interested in learning more about skin cancer, including the most common types, its warning signs and symptoms, and how we treat skin cancer in Lebanon, Hermitage, and Hendersonville, Tennessee, review our dermatologists’ answers to these frequently asked questions.

The most common types of skin cancer are basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and melanoma. To learn more about these common skin cancers, read our in-depth article

There are many different warning signs and skin cancer symptoms to keep an eye out for. When performing your monthly skin self-exams, you should look for:

  1. NEW – Any new spots or moles, especially if they appear after age 21, could be a sign of cancer.
  2. CHANGING – A leopard never changes its spots, and neither should you! If moles or spots on your skin have changed in size, shape, color, or texture, it could be a sign of cancer.
  3. UNUSUAL – If a spot is different from everything else on your skin, called the “ugly duckling sign,” or if it has an unusual outline, itches, hurts, crusts, or bleeds for over three weeks, it could be a warning sign of cancer.

Furthermore, it’s important to understand that not all skin cancer starts in moles. This is why it’s crucial to examine every inch of your skin—not just the areas with moles—to keep an eye out for suspicious spots!

If you’re not sure what a suspicious spot or abnormal mole looks like, we recommend visiting a board-certified dermatologist for a professional skin cancer screening. Schedule yours today with one of our exceptional dermatologists at Cumberland Skin!

Skin cancer occurs due to unrepaired cell DNA damage, which results in an increased risk of mutations that cause the rapid, out-of-control reproduction of cells. Cell DNA damage is predominantly caused by excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays, such as those from the sun or tanning beds.

Skin cancer cannot be completely prevented, as there is always a small risk of developing this common skin disease. However, there are certain preventive steps you can take to significantly reduce your risk.

The biggest step is reducing your exposure to UV rays. This means staying out of the sun during peak hours, regularly wearing sunscreen, wearing protective clothing and sunglasses, and avoiding the use of tanning beds.

Another preventive measure you can take to reduce your skin cancer risk is getting annual skin cancer screenings with a board-certified dermatologist. If you discover a lump, mole, or sunspot that you’ve never noticed before, it is always important to get it checked out immediately.

Skin cancer can be deadly when left undiagnosed and untreated, especially malignant melanoma, which can spread to other parts of the body.

Fortunately, most skin cancers do not have a high death rate and are easily treatable when detected early enough. This is why it’s important to visit a board-certified dermatologist regularly for your skin cancer screenings. Furthermore, skin cancer mortality rates are continually decreasing with the advancements in effective treatments, such as Mohs surgery.

At Cumberland Skin, our dermatologists use several different methods to treat and address skin cancer. The most common skin cancer treatments include:
