A Dermatologist's Guide to an Optimal Winter Skincare Routine

Always More Moisture

If our dermatologists could summarize the perfect word for the question, “What is an optimal winter skincare routine?” our answer would be “moisture, moisture, moisture.”

Humidity drops considerably from summer to fall to winter, and with that drop comes dryer air. And as you might imagine, dry air can wreak havoc on a face that was perfectly well-nourished just a few months earlier.

With the absence of moisture in the air, we see our patient’s faces becoming irritated, itchy, and dull, where they had a well-behaved complexion just a few months earlier.

We’ll talk about some of the solutions to these problems and share advice our clients give them on switching to their winter skincare routine.

Switch to a Gentle Cleanser

You need a cleanser that will not wick away the moisture left in your skin. We advise that moisturizing cleansers are best for this time of the year, with no drying sulfates and other ingredients that tend to take away moisture.

Moisturize for Glowing Skin

Since we’ve mentioned that the goal is to moisturize the face during those cold, dry winter months, you need cream-based moisturizers. The emollients in cream-based moisturizers ensure that the cream gets absorbed, keeping your face moist and “glowy.”

Don't Forget the Sunscreen

Even in the winter, UV rays don’t take a rest, so you’ve got to be vigilant and make it a habit to continue adding your minimum 30 SPF sunscreen to your winter skincare routine.

Layer on your Skincare Products

During wintertime, we carry various products that can contain ingredients perfect for your moisture-deprived face. But you don’t want to just goop everything on all at once. Here’s the routine:

  1. Start with your calming cleanser.
  2. Then, apply serums like Hyaluronic Acid (we carry SkinCeuticals’ Hyaluronic Acid Intensifier, which fits the bill here.)
  3. Finally, add a quenching cream, like SkinCeuticals’ Triple Lipid Restore 2:4:2, which contains the fatty acids and ceramides you need.

Listen to your Dermatologist

Nowadays, you can find an “expert” on everything on social media. And while there might be good advice there, it’s hard to cut through the clutter with all the noise and buzz around skincare from some not-so-qualified sources. There are a lot of rumors out there sharing incorrect information regarding winter skincare routines, so we want you to hear the advice directly from your skin expert here at Cumberland Skin.

At Cumberland Skin, we carry many high-end products that are perfect for creating the perfect winter skincare routine.
