The Various Treatments for Hair Loss

Hair is a big part of who we are and how we choose to represent ourselves to those around us. Both men and women can spend a fortune taking care of their hair on things such as salon appointments and hair care products, which can make things a bit confusing when it starts to fall out suddenly and without warning.

Hair loss affects people all over the world, as it can be an inevitable part of aging. However, there are several treatment options for restoring hair and preventing any further hair loss.  After being seen by a dermatologist, they will determine a treatment option that best fits your needs.

There are a number of ways to treat hair loss, but the treatment plan will depend on the reason for which you are losing hair. Treatment options can consist of hormone management, dermarolling, supplements, topicals, and light therapy. In this article, we will break down each of the treatment plans to find out what they consist of and how effective they can be.

Hormone management

With age, unfortunately, we are all prone to hair loss at some point in our lives. It’s an inescapable part of aging. When your hair begins to thin and fall out, it can be a sign of internal body changes. A loss of hair may be an inevitable part of growing old, but it can also be a sign of an endocrine imbalance.

Hormones play a significant part in the overall health of a person’s hair. Having unbalanced hormones can cause hair loss in women. When women hit the menopause stage, the female body begins to produce less estrogen and progestin, which are both essential elements of hair health. Typically, hormone management or hormone replacement therapy is a solution to women who are menopausal.

If your dermatologist concludes that the reasoning for your hair loss is in fact due to a hormonal imbalance, he or she may suggest hormone management as a solution to regain control and prevent further hair loss. This solution may be given in the form of a pill, cream, or patch and can be a highly effective way to regrow lost hair for women.

Light therapy

Light therapy, also known as low-level laser therapy, is another solution for treating hair loss. This treatment option functions to illuminate photons into a person’s scalp tissue. The photons are then soaked up by weaker cells to stimulate hair growth.

This may seem like an extreme measure, but it is actually a lot safer than it sounds. The notion of light therapy is that light therapy treatment will produce circulation and stimulation that will then promote hair follicles to grow hair.

Light therapy has been proven to be an effective way to remedy hair loss, though it’s not a solution that has worked for everyone.

Minoxidil

Minoxidil is a common topical that is applied to the scalp. Its main objective is to help restore lost hair and prevent losing it further. With each person being different, results of course vary, but the good news is that 60-70% of patients who use minoxidil state that the density of their hair begins to stabilize within 3 months of treatment.

Dermarolling

Dermarolling may seem like an intense treatment, but it’s actually a very safe way to restore lost hair. With dermarolling, your dermatologist will roll tiny needles on your scalp, creating small punctures that make it easier for topicals to find their way to your hair follicles.

The takeaway

Hair loss can be scary and frustrating. Though it is considered a very normal part of aging, we can all agree that it’s no fun. The best way to restore hair loss is to reach out to your dermatologist so that he or she can find the cause, determine a solution, and plan treatment. Whether it’s through the use of topical or light therapy, hair loss can often be remedied with the help of expert analysis.
