Photodynamic Therapy

What is Photodynamic Therapy?

photodynamic therapy is an innovative treatment that utilizes the power of light to address and treat everything from acne and psoriasis to actinic keratosis and certain forms of skin cancer.

Also commonly referred to as blue-light therapy, photodynamic therapy is an advanced dermatology treatment that combines photosensitizing agents with light energy to correct and treat common skin conditions, such as actinic keratosis or acne. Photosensitizers, such as a topical cream, are activated by certain wavelengths of light and become toxic to the targeted issue.

At Cumberland Skin, our board-certified dermatologists are experienced in utilizing photodynamic therapy (PDT) to help our patients treat and reverse several moderate to severe skin conditions with little to no downtime. Learn more about this revolutionary treatment method by reading our short guide on photodynamic therapy below.

Questions

Photodynamic Therapy FAQs

Learn more about photodynamic therapy and how it can improve the health of your skin in our FAQs section, where our board-certified dermatologists answer the most common questions regarding PDT.

There are several different types of light used in photodynamic therapy. This includes laser light, intense pulsed light, light-emitting diodes (LEDs), blue light, red light, and many other visible lights, such as natural sunlight. We primarily use blue light to treat and correct certain skin conditions.

Yes, photodynamic therapy is very effective at addressing and treating acne. The blue light destroys the C. acnes bacteria, which is an acne-causing bacteria that gets into pores and triggers breakouts.

Additionally, photodynamic therapy for acne also reduces inflammation, which calms active breakouts and alleviates swelling. Following the photodynamic therapy treatment sessions, you’ll find your skin is remarkably improved with fewer blemishes and a clearer, smoother appearance.

Photodynamic therapy is also referred to as photoradiation therapy. Thus, it is a form of radiation. However, PDT has no long-term side effects when used properly and it is significantly less dangerous than other types of radiation therapy.

Some discomfort is often experienced during and after a photodynamic therapy treatment session. Our patients report feeling some stinging and tenderness at the therapy site one to two days following the treatment session.

Photodynamic therapy is  safe when administered by an experienced, licensed professional but side effects can occur. Our provider will discuss the benefits and any potential side effects during your consultation and address any questions you may have.

Photodynamic therapy is performed by one of our board-certified dermatologists. Our exceptional team is highly experienced in administering and performing this form of treatment to achieve the most optimal results.
