Cosmetic Laser Treatments 101: Incredible Benefits for Your Skin Challenges

If you’re looking to give your skin a boost that goes beyond a cosmetic cream, you might be considering laser treatment. No longer regulated to the world of construction, lasers produce incredible results for keeping your skin looking its best and addressing common issues like wrinkling, uneven pigmentation, and texture concerns.

But is a laser treatment right for you? Many people have questions about what these procedures entail and whether they will effectively address their skin concerns.

Below is a brief guide to lasers and the treatments you can expect here at Cumberland Skin.

Ablative Vs. Non-Ablative Lasers

First, let’s define the differences between two common types of laser treatments: ablative vs. non-ablative laser procedures. Put simply; ablative lasers remove the top layer of your skin.

In contrast, non-ablative lasers go below the surface to heat your underlying skin tissue and trigger your body to produce more collagen.

As non-ablative lasers don’t affect the skin’s top layer, their results tend to be subtle, while ablative lasers are more aggressive. For example, our core laser is an ablative procedure we describe as a CO2 resurfacing laser. It’s an excellent option for those who want to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other texture concerns.

In contrast, our Vbeam® Perfecta and GentleMax Pro® lasers are non-ablative laser treatments that won’t break your skin. They are better suited to treating minor problems related to pigmentation, redness, and hair removal.

What is a Laser Procedure Like at Cumberland Skin?

An in-office laser treatment at Cumberland Skin will typically take thirty minutes with minimal downtime after. However, this can vary depending on your procedure and how extensive your treatment is. Here are some examples of what you can expect from three popular procedures.

Laser Hair Removal: Our gentle laser hair removal treatment lets you live without the stress of shaving or waxing unwanted hairs. This procedure tends to be quick, depending on the treatment area, with minimal downtime. You can choose from purchasing individual sessions or a package deal of around seven treatments.

Photofacial Treatment: Used to treat redness and pigmentation on the face, our photofacial treatments are quick producers with minimal downtime. Your treatment plan may vary based on your skin condition and desired results, but we recommend at least two treatments spaced about four weeks apart. You can expect to need maintenance treatments every six months or so.

CO2RE Resurfacing Laser: Designed to improve your skin’s surface by removing signs of sunspots, fine lines, and wrinkles, our CO2RE Resurfacing Laser typically takes about 45 minutes once the skin has been prepped with a topical numbing cream. Expect to need just one treatment to see results, though the procedure will require some recovery time.
